Is Agu pig originally from China?!The leading hypothesis of the roots of Agu pig is that brought from China by Kumesanjyurokusei.Kumesanjyurokusei is a specialist group of Chinese who immigrated to Okinawa as the mediator of developing trade between China and Ryukyu Kingdom.
Even now,their descendent reside around Kume,Naha City.It is said that they greatly contributed in the great era of trade when Ryukyu Kingdom vastly expanded trade relations with South East Asia. They are grown with extreme care in a rich environment of sanitary pig pen sprayed with EM (Effective Microorganisms) in between the quiet mountains of the Yambaru blessed with rich natural water, and fed on an original diet blended with mugwort, seaweed and garlic.
The Agu pigs,black pig long known in Okinawa as the "Shimabuta",is a little smaller compared to other pigs and has a charing face.lthough there recently are restaurants that serve Agu pork dishes in various parts of Okinawa, there unfortunately appears to be many restaurants that serve non-certified pork with low purity of Agu pedigree. We serve officially certified "Yambaru pig breed" brand Agu pork of the Ganaha livestock of which the director of the Agu Preservation Association serves as chief executive.The Agu pork has a very slow growing speed, and it is a very rare Berkshire pig with a very low birth ratio. Though it is possible to grow them in large numbers, it is grown in limited numbers in order to give close attention to each pig. Delicious Agu pigs are grown by limiting the number to where the producer can steadily take care of them every day.
It is said that the Agu pig was brought from China about 600 years ago.A significant feature of the Agu pig compared to other traditional pigs is that it has less than 25% cholesterol. Its flesh has a lot of fat but is very healthy with only 25% cholesterol.Moreover,it has three times more glutamine acid and more than twice as much amino acid compared to ordinary pigs which are components that produce tasty flavor.It has little odor of pork meat and little scum. The combination of its soft meat and the sweetness of fat is truly amazing.The tasty flavor of its meat is just incomparable.
